I create explanations of what’s tough to explain: how people make words do work in the world.

I’ve published research on a Facebook fitness group’s communications (“Ripped Goddess and Women’s Ways of Making Fitness”), colorblind racism in online news coverage (“‘I Can’t Breathe’: Eric Garner…”), and policy advocacy (“Brokering Trust and Modeling Globalization…”). I also developed a term—”rhetorical decay”—that describes a family of communications obstacles (see visual below). Most importantly, this work shows how to solve problems in group culture—how to collaborate in the face of obstacles.

I am a creator, facilitator, and researcher.

I design collaborative processes that allow people to share ideas, learn new technologies, and track project success.

I lead conversations.

I use my research and teaching background to lead groups, fostering conversation about current challenges, tools, and emerging solutions. This includes policy development, needfinding surveys, conversation and training leadership, and metrics tracking.
I develop and facilitate workshops, and design mentoring opportunities.
